Boots No 7 Protect and Perfect - A new skin medicine?
Boots No 7- new studies.
New studies are under way to determine the true effectiveness of the active ingredient in Boots No. 7 protect and Perfect. Professor Chris Griffiths, Professor of Dermatology at the University of Manchester I half way through new studies to determine whether Boots No 7 was as effective as his initial laboratory testing suggested. These studies may lead to the active ingredient -Palmitoyl pentapeptide being reclassified as a medicine for treating sun damaged skin.
The product came to world attention after a BBC Horizon program in March where Professor Regan tested the product. Studies comparing the Boots No 7 to expensive ‘anti-aging creams’ and prescription only treatments left the Boots No 7 ahead of the pack. The real bonus - Boots No 7 sells for around $45 Australian out performed despite Professor Griffith’s initial sceptism.
He is following up these initial studies to look at the clinical effect it could have on improving sun damage and premature aging.
Palmitoyl pentapeptide prior studies.
Previous studies performed on pentapeptide have been performed in the laboratory, and though these suggest they will cause improvements in skin, there is a real lack of proper scrutiny on skin creams. Professor Griffiths said in the Times On Line “We were actually surprised to find that this one cream had any effect on reversing photo-aged skin. But that one observation was extrapolated to suggest that it worked in regular bodies.”
Little research had been carried out into the ability of over-the-counter anti- ageing products to treat such photo-ageing, Professor Griffiths said, but the suggestive results of his preliminary study had prompted a six-month double-blind clinical trial, involving 60 volunteers, funded by Boots. “We are giving the cream to 30 people to use on their faces and a normal moisturiser to 30 more as a placebo. At present we are about halfway through the trial, although we have not started assessing the results yet.”
Positive results in this trial may lead to a completely different level of scrutiny for cosmetics as medicines.
